Bias: The Mirror Effect 🪞

AI reflects the biases in its training data

AI learns from human data. Humans have biases. So AI learns biases too!

Example 1: The Job Problem If we show AI only photos of CEOs who are men, it will think “CEO = Man”.

TRAINING DATA (BIASED):

RESULT: When screening resumes, AI favors men! ❌

Example 2: The Criminal Justice Problem Some AI systems for predicting crime were trained on biased police data. Result: They unfairly targeted certain neighborhoods!

Why Does This Happen?

The AI isn’t “evil.” It’s just repeating patterns it saw in the data!

The Mirror Effect:
Biased Society → Biased Data → Biased AI → Biases Society more! 🔄

🚀 Real-World Example

Amazon tried using AI to screen job applications. The AI learned from 10 years of hiring data—but that data showed they mostly hired men! So the AI started automatically rejecting résumés with the word “women’s” (like “women’s chess club”). Amazon had to scrap the system!

How to Fix Bias 🛠️

1. Diverse Training Data

Train with data representing EVERYONE.

How to Spot a Deepfake 🔍

Detective Checklist:

1. Check the Hands ✋ AI is TERRIBLE at drawing hands!

Count the fingers (should be 5!)
Look for weird bending
Check if hands look blurry

2. Watch the Blinking 👁️ Real people blink naturally. Deepfakes often forget!

Does the person blink normally?
Do the eyes look weird?

3. Listen to the Voice 🎤

Does the audio match the lip movements perfectly?
Does the voice sound robotic or glitchy?

4. Check the Background 🏙️

Are there weird shadows?
Does the lighting match?
Are there blurry spots?

5. Look at the Source 📱

Who posted it?
Is it from a trusted news source?
Or is it from a random account with 3 followers?

DEEPFAKE CHECKLIST:

Ever seen a really good “face swap” filter on TikTok or Snapchat? That’s simple AI face manipulation! Deepfakes are like that but MUCH more advanced and harder to spot!

Check the source
Look for verification
Ask: “Could this be fake?”
