What AI website builders can do in 2026
Back in 2023, I wrote about Mixo.io, which could spin up a simple landing page from a one-line prompt. It felt like magic at the time. I also tried the then-current AI builders on this site and ended up writing the CSS and HTML myself. Looking at what is available now, Mixo reads like a horse-drawn carriage next to what is on the road in 2026.
An AI website builder is a tool that generates a complete, hosted website — layout, copy, and images — from a plain-language description of a business or idea, rather than requiring you to assemble pages by hand. The pitch has not changed: describe your website, get a website. What has changed is how good the result is, how much of the boring setup (hosting, SSL, a domain, basic SEO) gets handled for you, and how far you can push it if you happen to know how to code. This post is for two readers. If you have never built a website and just want something that looks professional by this afternoon, the first half is for you. If you can code and want AI to do the tedious 80% so you can focus on the interesting 20%, skip to the coders’ section.
No prior web design experience required for either half. I promise.
What changed in AI website builders since 2023
The early wave of AI website builders, Mixo included, were essentially very good template fillers: you gave them a sentence, they slotted your text into a pre-built layout. Useful, but shallow — ask for anything the template did not anticipate, and you were stuck.
The current generation does two things differently. First, the AI actually generates layout, copy, and images together, rather than filling in blanks — so a request like “a bakery site with online ordering and a story about our sourdough starter” produces something structurally suited to that request, not a generic template with your words pasted in. Second, several tools now let you keep talking to the AI after the first draft, refining sections with follow-up prompts instead of hunting through a settings panel. That second part is the real shift: less “here is your website,” more “here is a conversation that produces your website.”
This shift toward conversational refinement shows up clearly in two of the tools below. Wix rolled out a new Harmony Editor in January 2026, pairing Aria’s AI generation with full manual editing in the same interface rather than treating them as separate modes. Hostinger’s AI Builder has gone further still: on a paid plan, you can download the code it generates and own it outright. The neat line between “no-code builder” and “code-generating tool” is not as clean as it was even a year ago, and it is worth knowing that going in — the categories below are a starting point, not a fence.
How to choose the right AI website builder for your site type
Before comparing tools, it is worth spending thirty seconds on a more useful question: what are you actually building? A CV site, a shop, and a SaaS prototype have almost nothing in common, and the right starting tool depends far more on that than on which builder has the prettiest homepage.

The seven AI website builders below are aimed at people who do not want to write code, though a couple of them hand you more design control than a typical builder once you want it. You describe your business or idea, the AI drafts a full site, and you refine it with more prompts or a visual editor. Hosting, a domain, and an SSL certificate are typically bundled in.
Before the table: I have not built a production website with every product below. What follows comes from comparing each tool’s current builder, documentation, export options, pricing, and published features — plus three years of watching this category since my own 2023 attempt to have AI build this very site, which ended with me writing the HTML and CSS myself. Where I am repeating a vendor’s own claim rather than something I have verified independently, I have tried to say so. On the coding side, further down, Claude Code is the one tool here I use daily — everything I say about it comes from actually using it.

Several of these plans are introductory or long-term-discounted rates that renew significantly higher — Hostinger’s cheapest tier, for instance, is a 48-month rate — so check the renewal price on the pricing page, not just the number on the landing page. Squarespace’s Basic price also varies by region.
Planning to sell a serious number of products? I would look at Shopify — plans start from around $29–39 a month — rather than choosing a general-purpose builder purely because it has an ecommerce checkbox ticked. A handful of products bolted onto a Wix or Squarespace site is fine; a proper catalogue, inventory, and checkout flow is what Shopify is actually built for.

It is worth a special mention for exactly the reader this post is written for: someone who wants a genuinely beautiful site without learning any design principles themselves. You get a 14-day free trial with no card required, but you will need a paid plan to actually publish once it ends. One caveat: Basic includes 10 AI credits as a one-time allocation, not a monthly top-up — Core and above refresh credits each month. Think of the difference from Framer this way: Squarespace says “I want a beautiful site without becoming a designer”; Framer says “I care about design and want to tweak it myself.”
Durable is an AI website builder built for trades and local service businesses — think plumbers, personal trainers, consultants — that bundles a CRM, booking, and invoicing on top of the generated site itself, so you are really buying a small business toolkit, not just a homepage.
Hostinger AI Website Builder is a budget AI website builder with a “vibe coding” chat mode and, unusually for this price point, code ownership on paid plans. It is the one I would point a genuinely cash-strapped beginner towards: its cheapest tier undercuts most competitors, the chat mode means you are never stuck staring at a settings panel wondering which button changes the header font, and paid plans let you download and keep the code it generates — currently from Agentic mode. The advertised $2.99 rate is a 48-month prepaid intro; it renews at $10.99 a month, and the cheapest Premium plan only includes 5 AI credits for site and app creation, so budget for extra credits if you expect a long conversation with the builder.
